A rollup is a Layer 2 scaling solution designed to increase the transaction throughput of a blockchain by processing transactions off the main chain (Layer 1) and then posting a compressed summary of these transactions back to it. This approach reduces congestion and lowers fees on the primary blockchain, making it more scalable and efficient without compromising security. Rollups come in different types, such as Optimistic Rollups and Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Rollups, each using different methods to validate and secure off-chain computations.

For example, Ethereum, which often experiences high gas fees during network congestion, benefits significantly from rollups. By handling most computation off-chain and submitting only minimal data to Ethereum’s mainnet, rollups allow for faster and cheaper transactions while still inheriting the security guarantees of the Layer 1 blockchain. Projects like Arbitrum and Optimism are popular Optimistic Rollups, while zkSync and StarkNet utilize ZK Rollup technology.
